My first person I want to talk about is Ulysses s grant. He always was someone that seemed could be my role model. Ulysses s grant was born in Ohio and had this skill with horses. He was admitted to west point and graduated 21st class. He got married and had four children after that he resigned from the army. They lived in poverty for a few years. Shortly after the Civil war started he joined the army. After being in the army for a while he rose to prominence winning some early victories in the Western theater. In 1863 he he was the one who lead the Vicksburg campaign. When Ulysses joined the army his commanders put him in charge of a very unruly regiment. He whipped them into one of the best regiments in the area. He was promoted to brigadier general.  After that he sought to capture the Mississippi river. In February 1862 he took fort Henry and sought to capture fort Donelson His terms were "No terms but unconditional and immediate surrender can be accepted". The fort surrendered after that Abraham Lincoln promoted him to major general of volunteers. At the battle of Shiloh everything went wrong with the attack it was one of the bloodiest battles in the war to  date. A bunch of people wanted General Grant to be removed and have someone else that had more experience but Lincoln said. " i cannot spare this man" he fights".  After that everything seemed to work for general Grant he won quiet a few battles and at the end the South surrendered at the Appomattox courthouse on April 9 1865. Without the courageous effort of general Lee I believe we would have had a terrible time fighting the South.          The next thing in this report i am going to talk about is fort Sumter 1861. This battle was strange to me I enjoy looking at battles and movements of troops and supply's and such. IN this entire battle only one person died from an explosion. This battle was the first attack on the North and the attack that started the Civil war. The story is that the troops inside the fort hadn't been able to have a good meal in an extremely long time because the south more or less cut off supply routes to the fort. The attack started with someone that wasn't even in the army fired the lanyard on the cannon. This person was an avid supporter of the South and was sure they would win. Two days of fighting for Sumter surrendered for lack of food. This battle inflamed everyone and started an extremely long bloody civil war. Some facts about the fort was it was built for 135 cannons and manned by 650 soldiers. The fort generally used exploding shells called the ten inch parrot it had a cup like design and were manufactured quit cheaply. The battle of fort Sumter showed the North that the South was going to defend its sovereignty.
