 pocket hole joinery I think pocket holes are really cool. But they can be an eyesore I recommend plugs you glue them in. And then you sand it flush then you paint it over and the people using your table will marvel how strong it is but never find any screw holes because you have them plugged well. To make pocket hole joinery you can get a special bit and holder thingy for your board  and it comes a with a clamp it is called a jig put in pocket hole jig or something like that and yes you can get a reasonable pocket hole without this kind of fancy stuff but it is much nicer this way with the jig
