 The structure of karate is strange because in different martial arts, they do different things but at the same time the structure can flex and you could add new ranks if you wanted to. Fist is the founder of the martial arts or style that you do.  For us that would be called the shidoshi which is the founder of the martial art under that, we have people called shi hons these are the inheritors of the martial art and are more powerful than the normal black belt they also have a red and black belt signifying of the blood of Christ and the sin we still have.  Then directly underneath that are the normal black belts instruct class weekly. Under that are the higher up belts called sempai that also help teach class when needed.
